US Sup. Ct. Slip Opinion of June 12, 2025
Ruling: Once a state prisoner’s first petition for federal habeas corpus relief reach’s a final judgment on the merits in the federal trial court where it has been brought, any subsequent request for federal habeas corpus relief by the prisoner must comply with the stringent and difficult-to-meet gatekeeping requirements imposed by 28 U.S.C. §2244(b)(2), in order to obtain any further consideration of the prisoner’s habeas corpus complaints by a federal court. The Court unanimously relied on its own habeas corpus precedents and the text of 28 U.S.C. §2244(b)(2) to make this ruling.
